a preacher don't steal - 7. the agency

by nick nelson

part seven of 32

yancey woke up around ten o’clock the next morning. he did not have to go to school and his next shift at the restaurant did not start until four o’clock. his head was still filled with dreams about the history show he had watched, and with the show itself.

it took him awhile to remember who he was and where he was. this was a common occurrence when he awoke. when he finally remembered who he was, he totally forgot the show and the dreams.

but the apartment was strangely quiet. he could not hear yolanda talking on her device.

then he remembered - yolanda was gone.

and he had to go the rental office to tell them he was picking up the payments. he had to go in person, with his i d, he could not just call.

he decided to just get dressed and go, and get it over with.

at the rental agency, yancey showed his I d to the security guard and punched his rental serial number into a terminal just inside the front door. the terminal printed a ticket with a number on it and he took it and went into the large waiting room. there were about twenty people seated on the benches, which could probably hold a hundred.

there were four clerks at desks at the front of the room, dealing with people as their numbers were called.

yancey had to wait about an hour. he resumed his place in the book he had not read the night before, when he had decided to watch television instead.
