weekend - 1. sarah

by nick nelson

part one of four

robert had a boring weekend, so he was almost happy to be back at work on monday morning.

he got to work early and went into the employee’s cafeteria with a coffee and two doughnuts he had purchased at the dunkin donuts which occupied most of the first floor of the office building.

sarah, terence, ursula, and victor were also at a table in the cafeteria, consuming various beverages and pastries. they invited robert to join them,

conversation turned to what they had each done, or had done to them, on their weekends.

sarah had spent the weekend with a man she had met online. he had sent a limousine to pick her up and she had been driven to one of his castles in a remote mountain area. the man, sho called himself roy dark, although sarah suspected that was not his real name, was not just a billionnaire but the ninth richest man in the world - “for now” , he claimed.

sarah turned out to be one of sixty-four women invited by roy on this particular weekend.

it was explained to the women that they would engage in a series of contests to enjoy roy’s favor.

first, they would be paired off in boxing matches. each match would last ten rounds, or until a knockout.

the thirty-two winners would then run a twenty mile race, on a course that was mostly uphill.

the first sixteen women to finish the race would then move on to the next round, a drinking contest.

each of the sixteen who made it that far would be given a case of beer and the first eight to finish theirs off would go on to round four.

round four was a chili dog eating contest - with extra spicy chili dogs.

the next to last round was a swimsuit contest, judged by roy himself, and the first and second place finishers would go to the final round, a gladiatorial contest to the death.

sarah made it as far as the drinking contest, but passed out halfway through her case.

she woke up on the floor of a dungeon. she looked around and saw all the other losers and dropouts from the various contests, sitting and muttering to each other in little groups or sleeping it off.

sarah sat up. her head hurt. “can we go home now?’ she asked.

a few of the others laughed. “we are not going anywhere,” one of them told sarah. “at least for a few days.”

“and what happens after a few days?” sarah asked. “can we go home then?”

“of course not, birdbrain. we will all get shipped to some of roy’s castles, in mongolia or africa or the bermuda triangle, or someplace, to be slaves.”

“that’s just the way it goes,” another girl said.

“i figure it was worth it, for a chance to be roy’s girl,” said a third girl.

“but i did not sign up for this,” sarah said.

“i guess you did not read the fine print.”

“but i don’t remember signing anything at all,” sarah said.

“then i guess you must have been on drugs.” this got a big laugh.

some of the girls went over to the barred windows to try to watch the chili dog eating contest that was still going on. some of them shouted encouragement to the girls in the contest.

sarah resigned herself to her fate. what were you going to do? you take your chances in this life.

but that night there was an earthquake. the windows of the dungeon were twisted and sarah and some of the other girls managed to pull some of the iron bars loose from the windows and when some of the guards from roy’s security force came down to check on them the girls surprised the guards by whacking them on their heads with the bars, and escaped into the countryside.

as they ran down the mountain they heard helicopters overhead and a few random shots were fired at them from the helicopters, but the helicopters seemed more interested in just getting away from the area, and disappeared into the night.

sarah and a girl named daisy from teaneck new jersey and a girl named sandi from norfolk virginia made it to the bottom of the mountain, where they waved down a mostly empty bus on its route between two small towns.

the driver told them it was against regulations for him him to pick them up except at a regular stop but that he would make an exception for them because he was a nice guy.

sarah made it back to the city in time to take a shower and get to work on monday morning.

so ended sarah’s account of her weekend.
