dennis was not unhappy to be working overtime. he was used to it, and he would rather do it than go back to his apartment, where he might not be able to stop thinking about finding bob’s body.

it was quiet in the office. for some reaaon it always seemed much much quieter after the nominal “quitting time” even though quite a few people always stayed late.

and dennis enjoyed the mild camaerarderie of working with annie and marcie, even though he did not know then very well, or have much to say to them, or they to him.

the table they were working at was next to one of the side doors of the office, usually only used by the employees going back and forth to the restrooms.

now, the door opened suddenly and two men entered - two men dennis did not recognize.

they were curiously dressed, and were a curious pair.

the taller of the two was dressed like a “beach bum” or a movie or tv notion of a beach bum or a slacker , wearing khaki shorts, ragged sneakers, and a backwards baseball cap. but he had no tan.

his companion was dressed in a black suit, like a blues brother, or tommy lee jones and will smith in men in black.

“who are you guys?” annie asked them. annie was a little bolder, and less of a dork than dennis or marcie. “did you go through security?”

“did we go through security?” the beach bum replied. “lady, we are security.”

“i have never seen you before,” annie said.

“that shows you how secure we are,” the man in black said.

“but anyway, “ the beach bum added. “it is not you we want.” he looked at dennis. “are you dennis? dennis knight?”

“yes, i am,” dennis answered.

“is there someplace we can talk in private?” the man in black asked.

“of course,” annie told him, “there are little conference rooms all over the office. you ought to know that.”

“perfect.” the beach bum smiled at dennis, showing pearly white teeth.
